This Week in Utilities: Privatization Possibilities and the Most Powerful Wind Turbine Yet

Earnings announcements aside, utilities (and their dividend stocks) have been on the move in May. From privatization potential to paying customers to not use electricity, corporations have been busy thinking up new strategies to keep costs competitive. Here's what you need to know.

35,000 MW up for grabs?
After almost 100 years of service, the government-owned Tennessee Valley Authority may be up for partial or full privatization. According to a new report from the Energy Information Administration, the 35,000 MW power company isn't living up to federal budgetary standards. TVA's $25 billion in current debt is just $5 billion away from an indebtedness cap, which doesn't bode well for its expected $25 billion in capex over the next decade.

If TVA were to downsize or head to the market, there'd be up to 56 power plants up for grabs, including a 3,300 MW Alabama nuclear station and a 2,500 MW Tennessee coal facility.

Dominion's downsize
Dominion (NYSE: D  ) announced this week that it has shut down its 556 MW Wisconsin nuclear station after nearly 40 years of service. According to Dominion Nuclear President David Heacock, "This decision was based purely on economics" and was due primarily to a lack of scale and inopportune timing for purchase agreement renewals.

Although the decision was first announced last fall, it seems that decreasing demand is causing many utilities to consider exactly how much electricity they need. Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK  ) announced last week that it has suspended plans for new nuclear units at a North Carolina site, in spite of increasing cost competitiveness for nuclear generation.

PPL pilots new energy reduction program
Across the pond, PPL's (NYSE: PPL  ) British utility Western Power Distribution is trying to get its commercial customers to cut consumption. The company announced this week that it will be offering 15 businesses financial incentives to reduce their overall electricity use and/or shift use to non-peak hours. While reduced demand might seem backwards for any business model, an electricity use reduction would allow PPL to forgo costly upgrades to its current electricity system. And, as the utility's energy efficiency project manager points out, carbon emission targets provide an additional reason to increase efficiencies where possible.

GE puts wind in NextEra's sales
But efficiencies don't have to come from decreased generation (a la Dominion) or decreased consumption (a la PPL). General Electric (NYSE: GE  ) unveiled its largest, most efficient wind turbine to date this week -- and NextEra (NYSE: NEE  ) nabbed 59 for its new wind farm. NextEra is the largest renewable-energy producer in the country, and these newest purchases will add around 100 MW to its current 10,000 net MW of wind capacity.

With an 80-meter height and 100-meter blades, the new turbines are rated to 1.7 MW each, 6% more than GE's previous best. The turbines use streaming data to make the most of each breeze and, according to GE's general manager for wind projects, offer "consistent performance, reliability, and efficiency."

Stay current on electricity
The world of utilities is changing fast, and dividend stocks aren't the stable stalwarts they once were. Be sure to check back weekly for the latest on your portfolio's moves, and you'll be well on your way to electrifying earnings.

As the nation moves increasingly toward clean energy, Exelon is perfectly positioned to capitalize on having the largest nuclear fleet in North America. This strength, combined with an increased focus on balance sheet health and its recent merger with Constellation, places Exelon and its resized dividend on a short list of the top utilities. One under-$10 wireless services player that looks poised for a big spike higher is KongZhong (KONG), which is a provider of WVAS and mobile games to mobile phone users and a wireless media company providing news, content, community and mobile advertising services through its wireless Internet sites in the PRC. This stock is off to a hot start in 2013, with shares up sharply by 53%.

If you take a look at the chart for KongZhong, you'll notice that this stock has been downtrending badly for the last two months, with shares plunging lower from its high of $14.92 to its recent low of $7.78 a share. During that downtrend, shares of KONG have been consistently making lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of KONG into oversold territory, since its current relative strength index reading is 30.21. Shares of KONG are now starting to spike higher off its recent low of $7.78 a share and off its 200-day moving average of $7.95 a share. This spike could be signaling that the downside volatility for KONG is over in the short-term and the stock is ready to trend higher.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in KONG if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $8.50 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 519,857 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then KONG will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $10 to its 50-day moving average at $11.33 a share.

Traders can look to buy KONG off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support at $7.78 a share. One can also buy KONG off strength once it takes out $8.50 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

China is set to ease the one child policy, something that could benefit Chinese stocks in general but be especially beneficial to insurance stocks like China Life Insurance Company Ltd (NYSE: LFC) and CNinsure Inc (NASDAQ: CISG) plus health care stocks like Mindray Medical International Ltd(NYSE: MR) and Concord Medical Services Hldg Ltd (NYSE: CCM). First, let be clear that China is NOT abolishing the one child policy as the changes will merelyallow married couples to have two children if one spouse is an only child plus it will be up to China 34 province-level administrations to revisetheir laws and put the new policy into effect. Moreover, China family-planning bureaucracy employs more than 500,000 full-time workers and six million part-time workers all the way down to the village level tocollect billions of dollars in fines and these bureaucrats have fought for years against policy changesmeaning they could throw up roadblocks if not placated. With that said, the insurance and health care sectors are two sectors with publicly Chinese stocks that look set totake advantage of the coming changes.

Top 5 Warren Buffett Companies To Watch For 2014: Implant Sciences Corp (IMSC.PK)

Implant Sciences Corporation (Implant Sciences), incorporated in August 31,1984, develops, manufactures and sells sensors and systems for the security, safety and defense (SS&D) industries. Its technologies are used worldwide in security and inspection applications. Implant Sciences has developed technologies used in explosives trace detection (ETD), and and narcotics trace detection (NTD) applications and market and sell handheld ETD and benchtop ETD and NTD systems that use its technologies. The systems are used by private companies and Government agencies to screen baggage, cargo, vehicles, other objects and people for the detection of trace amounts of explosives. Implant Sciences have developed explosives detection systems designed for use in aviation and transportation security, high threat facilities and infrastructure, military installations, customs and border protection, and mail and cargo screening. The systems use the Quantum Sniffer technologies, including photon-based, non-radioactive ion source in combination with ion mobility spectrometry, a detection tool sensitive to the speeds with which ions of various substances move through the air to electronically detect minute quantities of explosives vapor and particles.

Quantum Sniffer QS-H150 Portable Explosives Detector

The Quantum Sniffer QS-H150 Portable Explosives Detector employs a vortex collector for the simultaneous detection of explosives particulates and vapors with or without physical contact and in real-time. The QS-HS150 can detect vapors and nanogram quantities of explosives particulates for explosives substances considered to be threats. The substances include military and commercial explosives, improvised and homemade explosives, and propellants and taggants.

The QS-H150 has automatic and continuous self-calibration. It monitors its environment, senses changes that would affect its accuracy, and re-calibrates accordingly. The system requires no user intervention and no calibration cons! umables. The detection process begins with the collection of a sample with its vortex collector. After collection, the sample is ionized photonically and analyzed using ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) technology. The presence of a threat substance is indicated by a visible and audible alarms. The threat substance is then identified and displayed on the integrated liquid crystal display (LCD) screen. When detecting a threat substance, the QS-H150 rapidly alarms. This real-time detection limits equipment contamination and allows for fast clear-down.

Quantum Sniffer QS-B220 Benchtop Explosives and Narcotics Detector

QS-B220 Benchtop Explosives and Narcotics Detector uses dual IMS with non-radioactive ionization for the detection and identification of a range of military, commercial, and improvised explosives as well as narcotics. The QS-B220 uses a sample trap which is wiped on the surface to be interrogated for explosives or narcotics particles.

The QS-B220 has automatic and continuous self-calibration. It monitors its environment, senses changes that would affect its accuracy, and re-calibrates accordingly.

Quantum Sniffer TM QS-Hx Portable Explosives Detector

The Company is focusing in developing a next-generation handheld detector that will use dual IMS non-radioactive ionization for the detection and identification of a range of military, commercial and improvised explosives, as well as narcotics. The QS-Hx will have automatic and continuous self-calibration, multi-level password-protected data security and will include a data management interface with data export to a network for recordkeeping, providing a link with the central command centers and logistics systems used by carriers.

Miniature Mass Spectrometer

The Company acquisition of Ion Metrics enabled it to obtain miniaturized quadrupole mass spectrometry (QMS) detector technology. The QMS detector is roughly the size of an AA battery and has low manufactur! ing costs! . When used in conjunction with an IMS, the QMS detector senses the molecular weight of the chemical species resulting in an orthogonal detection method in which a more fundamental characteristic of a substance is measured. It is developing interfaces for integrating the QMS detector into its future products.

Hyphenated Detectors

Depending on the application and the number of interfering background chemicals, it may be necessary to incorporate additional orthogonal detection methods. The combination of multiple sensors in series is known as employing hyphenated methods. By measuring different properties of the same species, interferents are separated from target species for a deterministic detection and identification and have minimum rates of false alarms. It is developing hyphenated systems employing conventional ion mobility, differential mobility and quadrupole mass spectrometry. As of June 30, 2012, it has one patent issued in real-time trace detection by IMS and QMS and two hyphenated system patents pending.

The Company competes with Morpho Detection, Inc., NucTech Company Limited and Smiths Detection, Inc.

Varian Medical Systems (VAR) has been a staple in our portfolio since the fall of 2005. The stock has rebounded smartly, up +31% from its April 2013 lows through the first quarter. Varian continues to be the global market share and technological leader in the radiation oncology business. Unfortunately, the incidence of cancer continues its deadly growth. In the U.S. alone, the American Cancer Society projects that some 1.7 million people will be diagnosed with cancer. Expectations of new cancer cases around the world are approaching 25 million over the next three decades. Of these new cases, approximately two-颅hirds will be treated with some sort of radiation therapy. Varian has been at the forefront of linear particle accelerator since the late 1940's. Today the Company's installed base numbers over 7,300 LINACS across the globe a 60% market share. As impressive as that may sound, the availability of state-颅f-颅he-颅rt radiation therapy (radiosurgery and proton therapy) outside of the U.S. is woefully low. The developed world has access to 35 to 110 LINACS per million people over the age of 65. In the U.S., it's 110 LINACS per million. Western Europe and Japan is 35 to 65 per million. In India, Africa, Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia there are between 1 and 20 machines per million. In China there is less than 10 machines per million. Complementing the Company's long-颅erm growth opportunity in radiation therapy is the secular trend in the "digitization of radiology," which is a key driver of their lucrative software and flat-颅anel services business, plus their X-颅ay tube replacement business that sells into the installed base of competing LINACS. The Company's initiatives to drive greater productivity continue to bear fruit. In 2013 sales per employee increased 14% and operating income per employee increased 20% over 2012 levels. Such productivity has helped the Company offset the continuing losses as they rollout their pro

5 Best High Dividend Stocks To Buy Right Now

The latest buy for my Special Situations portfolio is Ryman Hospitality (NYSE: RHP  ) . The company operates four of the top 10 largest convention hotels in the U.S., and it converted to a REIT late last year, making it more likely to trade for a higher multiple. In March, I bought $2,000 of the stock, and it has since done little but go down. But Ryman is a solid company with premier properties that deserves to trade at a premium to peers, rather than a steep discount. So I'm adding another $1,000 to my position.

A brief recap
In my original write-up, I pointed out why you should love Ryman:

A low relative valuation A high dividend -- at 5.8% A commitment to return all funds from operations (FFO) to shareholders this year, through dividends and buybacks The highest adjusted EBITDA per room The best collection of convention hotels in the U.S. Good revenue visibility despite being a lodging REIT Low leverage and good interest coverage CEO's statement that "we will continue to deploy our free cash flow into the equity of this company until we are satisfied that this company is being valued where it should be."

Why it's cheap now
The stock traded to the mid-$40s following its conversion, but since then, the stock has been hit by a few different winds:

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One under-$10 health care player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is Symmetry Medical (SMA), which designs, develops and produces medical device solutions and surgical instruments. This stock has been hit by the sellers in 2013, with shares off by 22%.

If you take a look at the chart for Symmetry Medical, you'll notice that this stock has been finding some buying interest over the last two months, each time it's pulled back to around $7.75 a share. That action has started to form a bottoming pattern for SMA near that $7.75 level. Shares of SMA are now starting to challenge its 50-day moving average of $8.20 a share. That move is quickly pushing shares of SMA within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SMA if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $8.29 to $8.60 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 129,189 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then SMA will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $9.40 to its 200-day moving average of $9.59 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then put $10.50 to $11 into range for shares of SMA.

Traders can look to buy SMA off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support at $7.75 a share, or at $7.44 a share. One can also buy SMA off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Covanta Holding Corporation (Covanta), incorporated in April 16, 1992, is a holding company. The Company is a owner and operator of infrastructure for the conversion of waste to energy ( energy-from-waste or EfW), as well as other waste disposal and renewable energy production businesses. Covanta conduct all of its operations through subsidiaries which are engaged predominantly in the businesses of waste and energy services. The Company has one segment which is Americas and consists of waste and energy services operations primarily in the United States and Canada. The Company owns and holds interests in energy-from-waste facilities in China and Italy. The Company also has investments in subsidiaries engaged in insurance operations in California, primarily in property and casualty insurance. In 2011, it sold two landfill gas projects located in California. In May 2011, it acquired a metals processing facility located on its Dade energy-from-waste facility site.

< p>As of December 31, 2011, it owned 85% interest of Taixing Covanta Yanjiang Cogeneration Co., Ltd. It operates and maintains the energy-from-waste facility located in and owned by the City and County of Honolulu, Hawaii. In December 2011, the Company amended the waste disposal agreement with the Union County Utilities Authority to extend their terms from 2023 to 2031 and to increase the Union County Utilities Authoritys waste disposal commitment. The Companys EfW facilities earn revenue from both the disposal of waste and the generation of electricity, generally under long-term contracts, as well as from the sale of metal recovered during the energy-from-waste process. In the Americas, it processes approximately 19 million tons of solid waste annually. In total, these assets produce over 10 million megawatt hours of baseload electricity annually. The Company operates and/or has ownership positions in 46 energy-from-waste facilities, which are ! primarily located in Nort h America, and 15 additional energy generation facilities, i! ncluding other renewable energy production facilities in North America (wood biomass and hydroelectric). The Company also operates a waste management infrastructure that is complementary to its core EfW business.

Energy-From-Waste Projects

Energy-from-waste projects have two purposes: to provide waste disposal services, typically to municipal clients who sponsor the projects, and to use that waste as a fuel source to generate renewable energy. The electricity or steam generated by the projects is generally sold to local utilities or industrial customers. The projects are capable of providing waste disposal services and generating electricity or steam. The Company provides these waste disposal services and sell the electricity and steam generated under contracts, which expire on various dates between 2012 and 2034. Many of its service contracts may be renewed for varying periods of time, at the option of the municipal client.

Tehe Compan ys energy-from-waste projects generate revenue from three main sources: fees charged for operating projects or processing waste received; the sale of electricity and/or steam, and the sale of ferrous and non-ferrous metals that are recycled as part of the energy-from-waste process. Its customers for waste disposal or facility operations are principally municipal entities, though it also markets disposal capacity at certain facilities to commercial and special waste customers. Its facilities sell energy primarily to utilities at contracted rates or, in situations where a contract is not in place, at prevailing market rates in regional markets (primarily PJM, NEPOOL and NYISO in the Northeastern United States).

The Company operates, and in some cases has ownership interests in, transfer stations and landfills, which generate revenue from ash disposal fees or operating fees. In addition, it owns, and in some cases operates, other ren! ewable en! ergy projects in the Americas segment, which generate electricity from wood wast! e (biomas! s) and hydroelectric resources. The electricity from these other renewable energy projects is sold to utilities under contracts or into the regional power pool at short-term rates. For these projects, it receives revenue from sales of energy, capacity and/or cash from equity distributions and additional value from the sale of renewable energy credits.

The Company operates energy-from-waste projects in 16 states and one Canadian province, and are constructing an energy-from-waste project in a second Canadian province. Most of its energy-from-waste projects were developed and structured contractually as part of competitive procurement processes conducted by municipal entities. Its EfW projects can generally be divided into three categories, based on the applicable contract structure at a project: Tip Fee projects, Service Fee projects that the Company owns, and Service Fee projects that it do not own but operate on behalf of a municipal owner. At Tip Fee projects , it receives a per-ton fee for processing waste, and it typically retain all of the revenue generated from energy and recycled metal sales. The Company generally owns or leases the Tip Fee facilities. At Service Fee projects, it typically charge a fixed fee for operating the facility, and the facility capacity is dedicated either primarily or exclusively to the host community client, which also retains the majority of any revenue generated from energy and recycled metal sales. The Company also owns and/or operates 13 transfer stations and four ash landfills in the northeast United States, which it utilizes to supplement and manage more efficiently the fuel and ash disposal requirements at its energy-from-waste operations. The Company provides waste procurement services to its waste disposal and transfer facilities which have available capacity to receive waste.

Biomass Projects

The Company owns and operates s! even wood! -fired generation facilities a nd have a 55% interest in a partnership which owns another w! ood-fired! generation facility. The Companys six facilities are located in California, and two are located in Maine. The combined gross energy output from these facilities is 191 megawatts. The Company generates income from its biomass facilities from sales of electricity, capacity, and where available, additional value from the sale of renewable energy credits. With a free cash flow yield of 14%, NetApp Inc.(NTAP) is dirt cheap, according to Barron’s. NetApp shares have fallen from $50 three years ago to $35.48 recently, in part because revenue has decelerated fast enough to set off air bags: from 22% growth in fiscal 2012 to a projected decline of 0.4% for its current fiscal year, which runs through April. But profits remain rich, and there’s reason to believe NetApp will soon return to revenue growth. NetApp shares could rise more than 25% to $45 in the coming year. In a takeover they could fetch $50.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Alan Brochstein]

Taking into account all of the data I have shared, I want to introduce my take on the most important names to follow. My initial list takes into account not only the market cap, but also business model and interest level. These are the stocks that I think merit the most attention (in alphabetical order):

    CannaVest (CANV.OB)GW Pharma (GWPH)MedBox (MDBX.PK)Medical Marijuana, Inc. (MJNA.PK)

CANV doesn't really trade, as it is held closely by insiders (99.7%, including MJNA). I have a few concerns, including the valuation and some near-term financial challenges typical of a start-up with just one client looking to expand its customer base, but I like the focus and the fact that it is an SEC filer with a relatively clean history (i.e. none of the baggage of some of these other companies). I have spoken to its outsourced CFO and am impressed by his background (has been CFO or held key financial roles at publicly-traded healthcare companies). CANV is the partner to MJNA that is responsible for manufacturing the CBD (Cannibidiol, the cannabinoid in marijuana that is increasingly viewed as offering substantial medical benefits). I am very concerned about the near-term financials, but this is a pure-play with probably a two-year lead over other companies. I don't see a moat in terms of intellectual property or brands, but they have a good lead in terms of sourcing of supply and penetration into potential customers. Quite simply, they don't appear to have competition at present. The company, then, is a call option on CBD demand taking off. It appears that it could be a supplier to even Big Pharma should medical marijuana research move into the mainstream.

Uber cheaper than New York City taxi - for now

uber nyc Hailing Uber is cheaper than using a traditional yellow cab, at least temporarily. NEW YORK (CNNMoney) Uber, the controversial car-hailing app, is waging war in New York City.

The company is temporarily cutting rates by 20% in the Big Apple, making it cheaper to get a ride from Uber than from a yellow cab, the company said Monday in a blog post.

While the rate cut is an experiment, it could become permanent if demand goes up, said Josh Mohrer, general manager for Uber in New York City.

Uber lets customers request a car with a smartphone app. Using your phone's GPS, Uber sends its closest driver to your location. The fare is charged directly to your credit card once the ride is complete.

The rate cut applies to UberX, the company's lower-end service, but not to UberBlack, which sends a higher-end vehicle, or UberSUV.

An UberX ride from Grand Central Station to the Financial District, for example, will now cost about $22, down from about $28. The same ride in a city cab will cost between $24 and $28, depending on the time it takes to get there, said a spokesman for the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission.

Tip is already included in the Uber rate, unlike the traditional cab's fare.

But Uber rates depend on traffic and other variables, too. The company's dynamic pricing model leads to fares that grow by as much as eight fold during periods of extreme demand, like winter snow storms and New Year's Eve.

The NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission is "committed to maintaining high standards for safety and consumer protection," said chair Meera Joshi in a statement.

"As long as services meet those standards, the consumer can choose which service best serves their needs, whether that's based on price, vehicle type, base location, or something else entirely," she said.

Uber is a four-! year old company that operates in 140 cities and 40 countries. Its latest round of funding valued the company at $18.2 billion.

Inside Uber's billions   Inside Uber's billions

Uber is slashing fares in other cities, too. Rates in Atlanta and San Francisco have already been cut 25% this summer. Demand went up after Uber slashed rates in cities like Boston and Chicago, Uber's Mohrer said. He is expecting the same result in New York and other cities.

While the company is growing rapidly, it has also drawn criticism. Most recently, European taxi drivers in cities such as London, Paris, Berlin and Milan protested against Uber. They say the way Uber charges clients break local rules on the use of taxi meters.

But the protests backfired, serving as free publicity for Uber and a surge in demand for its service.

What: After today's 7% drop,Investorsin natural gas engine tech expertWestport Innovations (NASDAQ: WPRT  ) have been hammered down 58% during the past six weeks. The falling stock price is a product of bad business results, and greater macro fears. On September 30, Westport revised its guidance for the full year down a whopping 25%, and stated that it would fall short of its goal of adjusted EBITDA-positive results for its three operating segments. Management cited Europe -- its biggest market for its core business -- remained soft, along with Russia and China, as well as delays in its co-development agreements with heavy-duty truck and engine makers to bring its high-pressure, direct-injection, or HPDI, technology to the market.
