Best Heal Care Companies For 2014

Just a few years ago, Poland's government had high hopes for exploiting the country's potentially vast reserves of shale gas. Successful extraction of gas from these reserves could generate enough revenue to help the Eastern European nation reduce its government debt and perhaps even become an exporter of natural gas, they thought.

Fast-forward to today, and one can see why actually fostering a shale boom requires so much more than just large reserves of oil or gas in the ground. Let's take a closer look at what went wrong and what the future may hold for energy companies interested in Polish shale gas.

Regulatory, tax, and other hurdles
Optimism about Poland's gas potential was initially fueled by data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, which estimated in 2011 that the country had potential reserves of 5.3 trillion cubic meters, which would make it the largest in Europe.

Encouraged by these estimates, foreign companies with the financial resources and technological knowhow to exploit shale gas reserves rushed into the country. The Polish government welcomed the foreign interest, viewing it as an opportunity to reduce the country's reliance on Russia, which supplies roughly two-thirds of the natural gas Poland uses each year.

This segment serves approximately 276,500 customers consisting of 257,900 residential customers, and 18,600 commercial and industrial customers. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Gary Jakacky]

On the other hand, our economy shows more strength by the day. Oil prices remain stuck in a five year range. Natural gas prices are testing new lows: successful fracking techniques recently announced by EQT Corporation (EQT) in Seeking Alpha (10/17/2013 @ 2:29 PM on Market Currents) could cut over $1.5 billion from the costs of drilling for gas, as well as assuage "environmentalist" concerns about fracking. Fuel is a major cost for transportation companies. So maybe IYT can catch a third breath?

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

Meanwhile, other producers like EQT Corp (NYSE: EQT  ) have decided to all but abandon higher-cost shale plays and only focus on those that can deliver profits. Because of this, the company made the decision to quit drilling the Huron Shale because it simply couldn't earn a high enough rate of return to keep drilling.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

This is why several of the play's producers, including Range Resources (NYSE: RRC  ) and EQT Corp (NYSE: EQT  ) , are coming together on a joint industry project to gain better insight into the play. The project, which is expected to last at least a year, will help the companies gain a better fundamental understanding of what rock properties are the most important for good wells. The hope is that the project will enable producers to better target the play in order to earn a return.

For tech-savvy investors who know which companies make them, when they hear the words "weapons detection" or "body scanners", they tend to think of companies like American Science & Engineering, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASEI) and OSI Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:OSIS). And well they should. OSIS and ASEI are two of the biggest North American providers of the kind of equipment you might see being used by airport security personnel screening passengers before allowing them to their gate. There's just one challenge in the average school system tapping OSI Systems or American Science & Engineering to help defend their school grounds.... their hardware starts with a six-figure price tag, and rapidly works its way up to higher-capacity and more powerful versions. For a school with multiple doors, it's simply not feasible. View Systems Inc. is a viable alternative.

And in July, we collected $100 in "Instant Income" from OSI Systems (Nasdaq: OSIS) -- a company that's never paid a single dividend -- for a return of 11.1% in 45 days, or 90.1% a year. I've listed of all my closed trades from this year here.

That the case with Medallion Financial Corporation (TAXI). This neat little company is primarily focused on the financing of taxi cab licenses in major cities like New York. It does other specialty lending as well — such as asset-backed loans for luxury vehicles like boats and art. But its bread and butter has been the taxi business.

    ICICI Bank Limited-ADR (IBN)

My second featured aggressive financial is ICICI Bank Limited-ADR (IBN), an ADR (American Depository Receipt) headquartered in India. This company is the largest private sector bank in India. Current low valuation is what most attracted me to this aggressive selection. However, I believe that prospective investors should carefully consider the amount of price volatility that has historically occurred with their share price. Nevertheless, for those dividend growth investors with a stomach for risk, this company may be worth taking a closer look at.
