Best Cheapest Stocks To Watch Right Now

The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC  ) has never been higher; in fact, if you had invested in March 2009 -- the Great Recession's market bottom -- you'd be looking at a 150% return in just over four years. That might make you think stocks are too expensive, but if you look at a few individual companies in the S&P 500, that's not necessarily the case.

One way to measure whether a stock is "cheap" is by its price tag. That's not the best measure, though; it's highly influenced by how many shares a company has outstanding. A different metric to use is a company's price-to-earnings ratio. This tells you how much a stock is worth, relative to how much money its company made over the past year. Right now, the average S&P 500 stock trades for a P/E of 19.3.

But even when we find companies with low P/E ratios, it doesn't necessarily mean they're a good investment -- these stocks could be trading cheaply for a reason. To dig deeper, let's investigate the five cheapest stocks in the S&P 500.

That leaves the only viable long-term strategy which has promise as mergers and acquisitions. Time Inc. did buy American Express Publishing recently. However, the revenue of the publisher of Travel + Leisure and Food & Wine is too insignificant to affect Time Inc.’s sales by any meaningful measure. Time Inc. has limited options if it wishes to make a large purchase within its own industry. Early this year, publisher Meredith Corp. (NYSE: MDP) had talks with Time Warner about buying most of Time Inc. Time Inc.’s management may have considered buying Meredith, but the market cap of the publisher of women’s magazines, which also holds broadcast properties, is $2.29 billion. Time Inc. would need to offer a large premium to the current share price to convince Meredith’s board that such a deal would be fair for shareholders. And Time Inc. is unlikely to gamble that sum of money to improve its revenue moderately. Alternatively, Time Inc. could try to buy Meredith’s magazine assets.

Despite what can best be described as asoft economy, small cap trucking stocks YRC Worldwide, Inc (NASDAQ: YRCW), Arkansas Best Corporation (NASDAQ: ABFS), Frozen Food Express Industries, Inc (NASDAQ: FFEX), Saia Inc (NASDAQ: SAIA) and USA Truck, Inc (NASDAQ: USAK) have been trucking some pretty impressive returns since the start of the year. In fact, these small cap trucking stocks are up anywhere from 72% to 150% or so since the start of the year despite the slow economy. Certainly trucking stocks provide a good indicator of how the economy is doing, but might investors bejumping the gun by pushing up these trucking stocks?

The other option here is eHealth (NASDAQ: EHTH  ) a private health insurance platform for individuals, families, and small businesses that's been around for years. In its third-quarter results released last week, eHealth noted that membership had risen by 24% to 1.147 million from the year-ago period, clearly showing skepticism in the Obamacare health reform law suggesting the success and options its private platform offers. If there's any company that can use Healthcare.gov's nightmarish start to its advantage, it's eHealth!

Obamacare is racking up expenses, in particular, with the creation of insurance exchanges. In this video, David Williamson looks at this feature of Obamacare, and a possible free market solution. The problem is that these exchanges are proving more expensive than originally thought, up to an estimated $5.7 billion for 2014. No wonder less than half of the states in the country have come on board. One solution is an online insurance exchange. A form of such an exchange already exists. Will it work for a nationwide insurance market?Hard to say. On the one hand, it could offer small businesses unprecedented access to insurance plans. On the other hand, an online market may simply offer those plans with the best commissions and not the best deals. (NASDAQ: EHTH  )
