Hot Small Cap Companies To Buy Right Now

Cancer has been one of the hotter segments of the sizzling biotech sector this year with small cap cancer stocksGenetics Inc (NASDAQ: CGIX), GTx, Inc (NASDAQ: GTXI) and MetaStat Inc (OTCMKTS: MTST) being among those involved in cancer research or treatment producing noteworthy news for investors to digest. Just consider the following:

Remember the HealthShares Emerging Cancer ETF (HHJ)? Bloomberg has a great article entitled essons Learned in the Exchange-Traded Fund Graveyardwhich began by noting that thereare now 337 exchange-traded funds that have effectively died with more than 40 percent of those deaths taking place in the last 18 months. The article mentioned that Vanguard's John Bogle loved to hate the HealthShares Emerging Cancer ETF(HHJ) when he wrote in a 2007 Wall Street Journal op-ed:ith each passing day, the market segments available through ETFs seem to get narrower. (Can you believe that we now have a ealthShares Emerging CancerETF?).His point was that such funds contradict the principal concepts underlying original index fund of offering the broadest possible diversification. In other words and if you want to invest in a narrow biotech market segment like cancer, you will need to stick with individual cancer stocks. Cancer Genetics Gets an Upgrade. Yesterday, Feltl said it had learned that Roche and Cancer Genetics, which offers products and services that enable cancer diagnostics along withtreatments tailored to the specific genetic profile ofan individual, have expanded their relationship to bring CGIX hospital program to Latin America and the Caribbean. They rate Cancer Geneticssharesa Strong Buy andraised their target priceto $30 from $17.50. On Wednesday, small cap Cancer Genetics rose 1.73% to $19.94 (CGIX has a 52 week trading range of $7.00 to $23.25 a share) for a market cap of $115.98 million plus shares are up 119.1% since last August. Cancer Genetics is also rising close to 3% in premarket trading right now.

I was so scarred by their subsequent crash that when I heard a portfolio manager rhapsodizing about the recent performance of Plug Power Inc (NSDQ: PLUG), Fuelcell Energy Inc (NSDQ: FCEL) and Capstone Turbine Corp (NSDQ: CPST), I could scarcely believe it. These were names that I had not heard in years, names that many investors would like to forget. Indeed, even with the recent run-up in their share prices, the value of these firms today is just a small fraction of what it was back then.

Back on March 11th, yours truly opined that the wild bullishness that had carried names like ZBB Energy Corporation (NYSEMKT:ZBB), Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ:PLUG), FuelCell Energy Inc. (NASDAQ:FCEL), and Ballard Power Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:BLDP) to triple digit gains (in just a few days) was coming to a close, and taking profits on any and all of these stocks would be a good idea. It was an idea that went over like a lead balloon, judging from the responses I got. How ridiculous of me to turn bearish on those names! FCEL, PLUG, ZBB, and BLDP were all flying high, and obviously since they soared over the course of the two weeks leading up to that date, they could only keep going higher forever.
